Rama threatens sanctions

Prime Minister Edi Rama met with the heads of educational institutions on Tuesday to address the ongoing student protests in Albania. During this meeting, Rama said the protests, which began as an expression of public discontent, have turned into an organized attempt to destabilize the country and hinder the EU integration process. He warned that he will respond to the protests with a new package of penal and administrative sanctions. After the meeting, he published a video on Facebook that showed him placing 12 red chairs and a sign with the word "Dialogue" at the entrance to the Prime Minister’s Office to indicate an offer to talk. This move is a hollow attempt to satisfy the international community.

Jesmina Sengla rejects the invitation

Jesmina Sengla, a student involved in the protests, responded to the Prime Minister’s video with the comment, "In your dreams." She said that the invitation to engage in dialogue is not sincere. She also said that Rama never meant his request to engage in dialogue. According to Sengla, Rama is responding to the pressure of the international community to ask the protesters for dialogue and to present himself as a leader who is willing to change. The students involved in these protests demand the fall of Rama and an end to corruption.
