The Kremlin’s war and the US diesel victory
The Kremlin maintains aggressive tactics despite a war against Ukraine that has consumed an immense number of human lives and resources for four and a half years. Moscow carries out massive daily bombings to destroy Ukraine’s economic capacity and executes a sabotage campaign across Europe to frighten Europeans into ending their assistance to Kyiv, which I view as a direct attempt to undermine Western support. I see the Trump administration’s temporary suspension of sanctions on Russian diesel as a major diplomatic victory for Russia. This decision aims to lower fuel prices ahead of US mid-term elections. I find the US move to reward Moscow’s obduracy quite striking. Russia continues to pursue its aggressive tactics in hope of an eventual triumph despite a protracted stalemate at the front.
Moscow’s influence in the Balkans
The resilience of Moscow’s influence in the Balkans is evident despite numerous setbacks in recent years. I observe that Russia remains eager to assist its local allies, specifically Milorad Dodik and Aleksandar Vucic. Russia remains ready to resort to intelligence operations to sabotage the region’s integration into the EU and NATO. I consider these intelligence operations a way to maintain the influence of local allies. The Kremlin relies on the support of Dodik and Vucic to preserve its regional standing. This focus on intelligence operations aims to prevent the region from joining the EU and NATO. I view this as Russia attempting to maintain its presence in the region despite its isolation. Russia is ready to use these methods to protect its interests.
