Explosions and fires in Voronezh
A drone struck the 25-story Chizhov Gallery business center in central Voronezh early on Oct. 26, according to reports from the media outlet ASTRA. Footage from ASTRA shows a drone exploding at the building, while the Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ also published imagery of the attack. Voronezh Oblast Governor Aleksandr Gusev confirmed that Russian air defenses responded to a drone attack over Voronezh and its surrounding areas on the morning of Oct. 26. A drone threat appeared at approximately 3 a.m. local time, and a missile warning followed about two hours later. Residents told ASTRA that they had not heard air raid sirens during the attack.
Thick smoke rose from several locations as explosions and fires broke out across the city. ASTRA reported fires in residential areas and received eyewitness videos identifying locations near apartment buildings where explosions occurred. I find the failure of the local warning systems concerning, as residents reported the lack of sirens despite the ongoing strikes. No reports immediately confirmed any casualties, and the Kyiv Independent could not verify if the explosions near residential buildings resulted from direct drone impacts or falling debris.
Regional strikes and previous targets
Voronezh Oblast borders eastern Ukraine, and the regional capital sits about 200 kilometers from the nearest Ukrainian-held territory in Kharkiv Oblast. This area has faced repeated Ukrainian long-range strikes against Russian military and industrial infrastructure. On June 22, Ukrainian forces struck the Voronezh Semiconductor Plant, which produces electronic components used in Russian missile and air defense systems, according to the General Staff of Ukraine.
| Location/Event | Detail |
|---|---|
| Chizhov Gallery | 25-story business center |
| Drone threat | 3 a.m. local time |
| Missile warning | Two hours after drone threat |
| Distance to Kharkiv | 200 kilometers |
| Previous strike | June 22 at Semiconductor Plant |
The current strike hit a central business district, but previous attacks hit industrial targets like the Voronezh Semiconductor Plant. The city remains a target because of its proximity to the border and its industrial facilities.
