Hegseth approval delays interceptors
President Volodymyr Zelensky says the United States has held up air defense missiles for nearly a month. These munitions support such Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems. The delay affects missiles for Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems that Ukraine’s allies already paid for through NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a mechanism through which Kyiv’s allies fund weapons purchases from the United States. A senior Ukrainian military official told the Kyiv Independent that the batch awaiting Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s approval is "significant." Zelensky said the US delivers only 12 Patriot interceptors to Ukraine each month. I find the hold-up on already-funded equipment a direct threat to the stability of air defenses.
Ukraine relies on Patriot systems to intercept Russian ballistic missiles. These ballistic missiles are particularly difficult to stop. Zelensky instructed his team to raise the delay with the American side once again. Because the current delivery rate of 12 interceptors per month remains a limiting factor for Kyiv, the situation is urgent. The Kyiv Independent first reported this delay. Ukraine obtains Patriot interceptors through several channels.
| Detail | Specification |
|---|---|
| Monthly Patriot interceptor delivery | 12 units |
| Funding mechanism | NATO’s PURL |
| Pending approval authority | Pete Hegseth |
Intelligence and communication outages
Ukraine has also experienced repeated disruptions to early-warning systems for incoming Russian ballistic missiles. These systems rely on US intelligence. American officials attributed the outages to "bad weather conditions." The outages have occurred several times in the past according to American officials. Ukrainian officials described these disruptions and delays as another example of political pressure from Washington that could put civilian lives at risk.
Problems with military-grade Starlink service, Starshield, have also hindered Ukrainian drone operations. These issues hampered the use of interceptor drones to counter Russian jet-powered attack drones. The disruptions to Starshield service specifically affected the ability of Ukrainian forces to use interceptor drones to combat Russian jet-powered attack drones. This service is a military-grade version of Starlink. These Starshield problems have slowed Ukrainian drone operations.
