Destruction of the Peace Square building
A Russian airstrike destroyed the Kramatorsk City Council executive committee building in Donetsk Oblast on Oct. 31. The building sat on Peace Square in central Kramatorsk and survived the city’s 2014 occupation by Russian-backed militants and its subsequent liberation by Ukrainian forces. Oleksandr Honcharenko, head of the city military administration, wrote on Facebook that Russia destroyed the central building of Ukrainian statehood in Kramatorsk with an airstrike, describing the council’s executive committee building as a symbol of identity. He wrote, "They can destroy a building, scorch our land and steal our memories. But they cannot destroy our right to a future." This structure previously sustained damage during a Russian airstrike on the city centre in March 2026, though information about casualties from that March strike was not immediately available. Suspilne reports that Russian attacks elsewhere in Kramatorsk on Oct. 31 also injured civilians. Kramatorsk faces increasingly frequent Russian attacks as Moscow’s forces continue their offensive in eastern Ukraine. I find the destruction of a building that survived the 2014 occupation to be a particularly grim blow to the city’s identity.
Drone warfare and regional strikes
Ukrainian forces downed 105 out of 134 drones, including jet-powered attack drones, launched by Russia overnight. Russian drones struck 20 different locations and debris fell in 10 areas according to the Air Force. President Volodymyr Zelensky said over 800 institutions have been damaged and he is asking American partners to find a solution for the time when there is a real danger and a real need to use PAC-3 interceptors. I see the intensity of these drone waves as a constant threat to civilian safety. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed uncertainty about whether a negotiated peace deal between Ukraine and Russia is possible during a G20 foreign ministers meeting on Oct. 31. A plant in the Russian city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky produces solid rocket propellant for the Uragan, Smerch, and Tornado-S multiple-launch rocket systems. Russian forces suffered 1,670 casualties over the past day. When asked about the reports of drone activity, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, "Don’t trust them."
