The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced on Oct. 25 that Moscow will host the 2030 International Weightlifting Championships. This hosting decision is the most significant development for the sport because the IWF becomes the first Olympic organization, recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to hold a competition in Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The IWF website says the 2029 championships will be "staged in Ahmedabad (India)," while Moscow will host the 2030 edition. This event brings weightlifting back to Moscow for the first time since the 1983 World Weightlifting Championships. Russian weightlifters have won 17 Olympic medals since the Soviet Union fell. Russia has remained largely sidelined from international competition since 2017 due to its nationwide doping scandal and international outcry over its war with Ukraine.
Legal shifts and political opposition
The IOC provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) on July 7 after a legal review found that the ROC "no longer includes as its members any regional sports organizations in territories falling under the jurisdiction of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine." Because of this decision, Russian weightlifters can participate if they meet the anti-doping requirements set by the IOC. This follows Russia being sidelined from the Olympics and related competitions since 2017 due to its nationwide doping scandal and international outcry over its war in Ukraine. Nine European countries urged the European Commission to halt funding programs for international sports organizations that allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete. Ukraine’s NOC subsequently appealed the IOC decision to the arbitration process. This openness contrasts with other sports, such as when Dutch authorities refused visas to three Russian gymnasts on Oct. 14, preventing their participation in the world gymnastics championships in Rotterdam. The war has also taken a heavy toll on the Ukrainian sports community, where hundreds of athletes and coaches have died and Russian missile and drone attacks have destroyed hundreds of sports facilities.
