The strike on Skovorodynivka

I see the Russian Prosecutor General’s charge against a lieutenant general as a direct and necessary response to the May 6, 2022, missile strike on a museum in the village of Skovorodynivka. This museum honors the 18th-century philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda, who remains one of the most influential figures in Ukrainian intellectual history. His written works provided vital and significant contributions to both the Ukrainian Baroque and Enlightenment traditions. The missile strike, which occurred on May 6, 2022, hit the museum in the village of Skovorodynivka, located about 55 kilometers from the regional capital, and left the building in serious disrepair. While the strike did not completely destroy the building, it caused significant damage to the structure. The building once functioned as the estate where Skovoroda lived his final years before his death in 1794. I find the decision to target this specific monument to be a blatant strike against the intellectual history of Ukraine. This museum remains dedicated to the legacy of this thinker.

The commander’s responsibility

On October 29, the Prosecutor General reported that a Russian lieutenant general faces charges in absentia for ordering the strike on the Skovorodynivka museum. The accused commander, who is a native of Chuhuiv in Kharkiv Oblast, commands Russia’s 6th Guards Air and Air Defense Forces Army. "The (lieutenant) general knew for certain that he was attacking not a military target but a monument of Ukrainian culture. Despite this, he gave the combat order to destroy it," the Prosecutor General wrote. I judge this command to be a deliberate attempt to erase a piece of national heritage. This attack on a cultural monument follows a consistent and devastating pattern of destruction since the start of the full-scale war. According to data collected by the Culture Ministry, 2,161 cultural heritage sites and 2,665 cultural institutions in Ukraine had been damaged or destroyed as of September 2026. The destruction of such cultural sites remains a recurring and painful reality in this ongoing conflict. The lieutenant general, who originally comes from the village of Chuhuiv in Kharkiv Oblast, commands Russia’s 6th Guards Air and Air Defense Forces Army and faces these charges in absentia for the 2022 missile strike.
